Manchester Utd, Chelsea Lead Four Into Champions League Last 16

By Bob Bensch

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Manchester United and Chelsea reached the round of 16 in soccer’s Champions League after rallying for draws, while Bordeaux and Porto advanced with away wins.

Manchester United scored twice in the final six minutes to tie CSKA Moscow 3-3 at home last night. Didier Drogba returned from suspension to score both goals as Chelsea fought back from 1-0 down to tie 2-2 at Atletico Madrid.

“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves and it became an uphill fight,” United manager Alex Ferguson said in an interview with MUTV. “That’s maybe not a bad thing though because it’s a reminder that when you leave yourself open in European football it can be very dangerous.”

Bordeaux and Porto joined the English Premier League rivals in becoming the first teams to advance out of the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition. Bordeaux beat Bayern Munich 2-0 and 2004 champion Porto won 1-0 at Apoel Nicosia.

Real Madrid and AC Milan tied 1-1 in a meeting of the competition’s two most successful clubs, Wolfsburg beat Besiktas 3-0, Marseille routed Zurich 6-1 and Juventus won 1-0 at Maccabi Haifa in yesterday’s other games.

Antonio Valencia’s deflected goal in injury time capped United’s rally from a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford. The draw extends United’s unbeaten Champions League home run to 23 games.

Alan Dzagoev gave CSKA the lead in the 25th minute before Michael Owen tied the game four minutes later. Milos Krasic put the Russian side back in front in the 31st minute and Vasili Berezutski’s goal two minutes after halftime made it 3-1.

Late Goals

Paul Scholes scored with a header in the 84th minute for United and Valencia’s long shot deflected in off Georgi Schennikov to secure the tie.

Three-time European champion United, which lost last season’s final to Barcelona, leads Group B with 10 points.

Zvjezdan Misimovic, Christian Gentner and Edin Dzeko scored as Wolfsburg stayed second with seven points, three more than CSKA.

In Madrid, Drogba scored in the 82nd and 88th minute to put Chelsea 2-1 up before Sergio Aguero tied the game with a free kick from 30 yards out in injury time. Aguero had put Atletico in front with a goal in the 66th minute.

Drogba was suspended for the first three group games for berating referee Tom Henning Ovrebo following Chelsea’s loss to Barcelona in last season’s semifinal.

Chelsea remains atop Group D with 10 points, one more than Porto, which advanced on Falcao’s 84th minute goal in Nicosia, Cyprus. Atletico is third with two points, one more than Apoel.

“We did everything we had to do,” Drogba told Sky Sports.

Bordeaux Beats Bayern

Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh scored as Bordeaux beat Bayern Munich for the second straight time. The win gives Bordeaux 10 points atop Group A.

Juventus stays second on eight points after winning at Maccabi Haifa. Mauro Camoranesi scored the only goal as Juve opened a four-point lead over third-place Bayern.

The draw between AC Milan and Real Madrid in Italy left both tied on seven points in Group C.

Karim Benzema gave record nine-time champion Real Madrid the lead in the 29th minute and Ronaldinho tied it for Milan six minutes later with a penalty kick. Alexandre Pato then had a goal disallowed for seven-time winner Milan moments later as he was called for a foul before putting the ball past Iker Casillas.

Marseille scored four second-half goals as it routed Zurich to move within a point of Milan and Real.
