Last month, Laura Pauli packed a suitcase and traveled from her home in San Francisco to the Modern Elder Academy—a boutique resort for midlife learning and reflection located on Mexico’s Baja peninsula. She needed a hiatus and time to ponder “what’s next” after a stressful summer. Pauli was laid off from her marketing job at a software company in June, and soon after volunteered to cook meals for first responders at California wildfire sites.

“I’ve always had one-and-a-half feet in the tech industry and half a foot in cooking, and now I may want to skew that the other way,” says Pauli, who’s 56. “To figure this out, I had to change my environment and get to a place where I felt inspired.”
